Kandaswamy Murugan Temple History
Kanthaswamy Temple, Thiruporur, is a significant Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Murugan (also known as Kanthaswamy). It is located in Thiruporur, a town near Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The temple has a rich history and is closely connected to the mythology of Murugan, who is revered as the god of war and victory.
Thiruporur is one of the 64 sacred places dedicated to Murugan and has a deep spiritual significance. The name “Thiruporur” means “the sacred place of war,” referring to the belief that this is where Murugan fought a fierce battle with the demon Surapadman.
The temple is believed to have been established by Chidambara Swamigal, a saint and devotee of Lord Murugan, in the 17th century. According to legend, Chidambara Swamigal discovered the temple’s deity under a palm tree after receiving a vision. He then re-established the temple and brought it into prominence. Before this period, the temple was said to have been lost or abandoned.
The temple is part of the Arupadai Veedu (six holy abodes of Lord Murugan), although it is not officially listed among the six primary abodes. However, it holds equal importance for devotees.
Mythological Significance:

- The temple celebrates Murugan as a deity of war, victory, and protector of good against evil forces, which are themes central to the temple’s mytholog
Architecture:
-
- The Kanthaswamy Temple follows the traditional Dravidian architectural style, with an imposing Rajagopuram (entrance tower) that rises above the temple complex.
- The main shrine houses the idol of Lord Murugan in his warrior form, holding a spear (Vel).
- The temple also has shrines for Murugan’s consorts, Valli and Deivayanai, as well as for Vinayagar (Ganesha) and Durga.
- The temple’s sanctum is intricately designed with sculptures depicting scenes from Murugan’s life and legends, making it an artistic masterpiece of South Indian temple architecture.
